Job Title:  Textile Engineer (Onsite)
Location : Lexington, MA
Job Type : W2 Contract  
 
Background/Need:
The Group is a multidisciplinary group that combines chemistry, nanofabrication, micro-assembly, and simulations to develop new microsystem technologies for applications in larger systems. Examples of current or recent past work include the development and testing of chemical sensors for trace explosives and toxic chemical detection (both point and standoff), development of nanoplasmonic- and metamaterials-based devices with new functionalities in the visible and infrared, applications of microfluidics in biology, micro-optics, and heat management, and the development of devices and subsystems on both the microscale and nanoscale that combine chemistry with newly engineered materials.

The group’s wide range of expertise includes capabilities in organic synthesis, mass spectrometry, and materials science, and its work is enabled by access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as the advanced synthesis, mass spectrometry, and surface science laboratories and the class-10 Microelectronics Laboratory.

We are seeking a person to support a variety of programs by developing concepts for fabrics and textiles and executing the fabrication. The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists pushing the boundaries of fiber and fabric functionality. This individual will be involved in supporting all aspects of product innovation, including multifunctional fiber design, yarn and fabric sourcing, fabric development, and full system integration. The individual will stay up to date with new textile technology developments and present new potentially applicable textile technologies to the DFDC team.

Must Have:
•Working with non-traditional yarns and/or electronic textiles
•Assembling fabric-based prototypes through pattern making and sewing
•Ability to run and troubleshoot a variety textiles equipment which may include:
•Industrial small-scale looms & warper- Cci.
•Industrial flatbed knitting machines – Stoll &/or Shima Seiki.
•Hand Looms.
•Laser Cutters- Universal.
•Yarn twisting & cover machines- AgTeks Direct Twist.
•Industrial sewing machines- Walking Foot, Lock Stitch, Overlock, & Tacker.
•Ability to clearly document processes, materials used, design decisions, and test results, with an emphasis on visual documentation (e.g., photos, diagrams, annotated sketches).
•Ability to clearly articulate ideas in a team brainstorming environment.

Nice to Have:
•Programing knit fabrics to run on Shima Seiki and/or Stoll Machines.
•Microsoft Outlook, Excel, & PowerPoint.
•Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop.
•Stoll &/or Shima Seiki knit platforms.
•General familiarity with fabric testing, finishing and industrial manufacturing textile processes.
•Familiarity with basic electronics, microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino), and soldering.

 

Education & Experience : Bachelor's with 2+ years of relevant work experience.
Schedule :   This position would be part time. 1 day a week for June & July with the plan to go full time by the end of July.
Work Authorization : US Citizenship is required due to the nature of the work.
